In daily writing lessons, we explore, practice and write a for a variety of audiences and purposes. We read and unpick great examples, practice the component skills needed to create these and spend time crafting our own. Writing skills are mapped out across the wider curriculum so pupils make links between a variety of learning and experiences.
Genres and writing skills taught are planned across the year groups so we pupils learning is sequential and builds upon what they already know. Teachers model and discuss the correct use of grammatical features and pupils have time to practice these before using them in a full text.
Activities are scaffolded through the use of writing frames, key spellings (with accompanying images), collaborative work and peer or adult support to allow pupils to make good progress from their starting point. Talk is integral to the teaching of writing at Paganel and pupils are encouraged to discuss, question and explore writing.
Pupils have regular opportunities for independent writing. This allows them the freedom to create complete pieces of writing and independently apply the skills they have learnt.
Spellings are taught discretely in all year groups. This follows the read, write, Ic scheme which builds on their phonics knowledge through Key stage 1 and into key stage 2.
Handwriting is also taught discretely in all year groups. This allows clear handwriting to become automatic so pupils can concentrate on the more complex mechanics of writing.
